I'm fine with either, even though I can't read any Japanese characters at all (I use a couple programs that translate Japanese into somewhat-readable English in real time).
Having said that, there are still a lot of sentences with meanings that I can't really make a good guess at (which makes following a plot with some depth really tricky), but overall I do okay with it. If anything some of these works are more like visual novels rather than actual games.
Since RPG games are more about exploration, turn-based/Pokemon-style fighting (sometimes), and most importantly: quick and relatively simple dialogues, the fictional situations are much easier to follow. My only real complaint about most Japanese H-RPGs are the fighting mechanics (assuming they're turn-based and similar to the Pokemon games, which most of them are). They get boring pretty quickly since it seems like any RPG game with a fighting sequence uses that as the only way to defeat an opponent, and it gets old really quickly when you play all the various RPG games only to realize that as far as the actual game play goes, they're mostly the same with very little variation. Hopefully a game makes up for it though with exciting CG and effectively representing whatever fetish genre it was advertised as.
So I don't mind an adventure-themed visual novel/game, but RPGs are (for now), my favorite way to play an H-game (because let's face it, there really aren't any good H-games out their on the same tier as some of these (non-pornographic) AAA games that massive developers make, which is unfortunate because you'd think there would be enough of a market out there for such a company to be profitable if they made AAA-H-games, hell if I knew anything about game design I would organize a team of people over the Internet and try to take a crack at it myself). |
