Probably a makeup story made by human who fantasizes about what is lurking behind the dark places in the forest. But as long as it is not yet disproved, human will always have the fantasy that there are such illusive creature that haven't been found. I think it exist because there are a lot of mysteries in this world, I also read an article of a mothman half bird half human.. and I think that they can transform to human to hide themselves
