You may have read a few months ago that there was a hidden emulator in Nintendo Switch that was designed to play NES Golf. Nintendo didn’t really reveal much about this Easter Egg yet users could access the emulator when certain conditions were met to play this secret golf game. It appears that Nintendo has removed the code now which means that the company has essentially deleted the game from the Switch’s firmware.

Switch players could play NES Golf but only on July 11th. That’s the day when ex-Nintendo president and the game’s programmer Satoru Iwata passed away.

They could access the emulator by using the Joy-Con to perform Iwata’s Nintendo Direct sign-off gesture on the aforementioned date. That’s when the secret game would boot up and become playable using the motion controllers.

It felt like an intentional tribute to the late Nintendo icon but the company didn’t say anything about it. Moreover, the emulator could only be accessed on older versions of the Switch. This suggested that either Nintendo didn’t want for the game to be discovered at all or it just didn’t want it to be discovered at that point in time.

Whatever the case maybe, Nintendo has reportedly removed all of the code that was required to make this emulator function from the firmware. The 4.0.0 firmware update for the Nintendo Switch removes all of the code that was required for this title to function.
